Former Manchester United defender Rio Ferdinand has expressed his concerns over Matthijs de Ligt’s injury problems as he prepares to join Old Trafford.
“He’s been injured a lot, hasn’t played much in the last two or three years and Manchester United are willing to pay £45-50m for him.”He told Rio Ferdinand Presents.
“Can he come to Man United and make a difference? I think it’s too much to ask of him and all eyes will be on him.”
“The pressure is high, it’s a good opportunity for him. But I think there’s a lot of uncertainty in this signing. Because his previous seasons at the two big clubs didn’t go as we expected.”
Manchester United have agreed a deal with Bayern Munich to sign the Netherlands international after weeks of talks, with the fee including add-ons set to be £42m paid in three-year instalments.

After three years in Turin, De Ligt moved to Bayern in 2022. But injury problems limited him to just 73 appearances, and it was these problems that worried Ferdinand.
